Canals can be dangerous for animals because of their steep walls which prevent any animal that falls in to climb back out. A Doberman on Marco Island, Florida found out just how dangerous when he fell into the canal. No one saw him fall in. After splashing around for what was later determined to be upwards of 15 hours, the poor dog was frantic.
All the splashing the dog was doing caught the attention of a pod of dolphins. Curious, the dolphins swam closer to investigate. Dolphins have a reputation for being very intelligent and they understood the dog’s panic. They began making such a ruckus that people who lived in the area came out to investigate.
Upon seeing the dog in trouble a rescue was staged. Fireman arrived and brought the dog up out of the water. Dehydrated and exhausted, the dog likely would not have survived if not for the dolphins.
Dolphins are known to be highly social and form friendships with other dolphins. Their actions on this day demonstrate a capacity for emotional response and concern for another species.
