When summer finally rolled around, Lauren Lynde and her husband decided that it would be fun to take their dog, Wally, out for a swim to cool off. So the couple prepared their bags and headed straight to one of the islands in Hickory Hills Lake in Massachusetts aboard a canoe.
As soon as they reached the site, Lauren brought out Wally’s shark life vest and put it on the pup. The excited two-year-old golden retriever then hopped into the water and began swimming with gusto. The fur parents couldn’t help but laugh at Wally’s adorable reaction, especially since they knew how much of a fan of the water he really was.
In fact, Lauren shared that once the canine started swimming, it was almost impossible to get him out. They typically had to bribe him with balls or sticks to make him return to the shore. Fortunately, Wally was behaved enough not to wander too far away, so the couple contented themselves with observing him from a safe distance.
Unfortunately, while Lauren kept watch, she spotted something peculiar bobbing in the water nearby. She initially thought it was a large stick or an otter, but then the mysterious object suddenly hopped onto the golden retriever’s back! That was when Lauren realized that it was actually a woodchuck.
The fur mom was confused why a woodchuck was out swimming in the lake, but she figured it might have been cooling off like everyone else. Lucky for the rodent, Wally didn’t seem to mind giving it a ride back to shore, and he even looked back on the groundhog several times to ensure that it was okay.
Lauren and her husband couldn’t believe what had just happened, especially when the woodchuck touched Wally’s nose with its snout as if saying thanks. Although the pup went right back to swimming like nothing happened, the adorable encounter surely made the couple’s day a lot brighter. Look at Wally and his woodchuck buddy here.
