Here is a list of dogs often mistaken for a pit bull.

1. The American Bulldog

This large dog can weigh 100 pounds at most. They are usually white, with markings in different shades. These gentle giants are not Pit Bulls although they kind of look like one.

Just like the honest-to-goodness Pit Bull, the American Bulldog is also an excellent family dog. They can thrive in all sorts of settings – from a farm to a cramped urban apartment. These dogs need consistent exercise and socialization.

The American bulldog is a skilled sport and hunting canine. It is quite a favorite in show rings. These dogs come in two kinds – bully and standard.

The pit bull happens to be smaller in size compared to the two aforementioned types of the American bulldog.

2. The Presa Canario

This large dog is reminiscent of a mastiff. It is powerful and can weigh up to 150 pounds. This working dog is typically employed as a guard dog or a herding canine.

The Presa Canario is prone to aggression and dominance. This dog is not suited for first-time dog parents. It takes time to get used to this dog’s larger-than-life attitude and immense size.

Fortunately, the aggression common in Presas can be tempered through obedience training and ample socializing. Although Presas share this dominance as well as other physical attributes with pit bulls, these two breeds significantly differ in size.

3. The Cane Corso

The Cane Corso also goes by the name Italian mastiff. It can weigh around 70 to 100 pounds. This Molosser breed used to work as a guard dog.

Although friendly for a guard dog, the Cane Corso is still quite demanding. Their sheer size requires experience and time from their humans. What their owners get in return for raising this breed is unrivaled loyalty, affection, and protection.

In contrast, pit bulls are more social. They are also significantly smaller compared to the Italian mastiff.

4. The Bull Terrier

The bull terrier came to prominence when it appeared in a series of Bud Light commercials. Often mistaken for a Pit Bull, this breed shares pit bulls’ stubbornness. This is a distinct breed from a pit bull because it has triangular eyes and an egg-shaped head.

The bull terrier is a stocky and muscular dog. Although small in size, these dogs are confident and cool.

5. The Boxer

Considered as one of the United States’ most popular dogs, this working canine is both an excellent hunting and guard dog. It can weigh as much as 80 pounds and are usually fawn in color. This is the main reason why the boxer is often mistaken for a Pit Bull.

Boxers are energetic and smart dogs. They can be quite stubborn and mischievous, too. Pit bulls are smaller compared to boxers.
